Do you have a design philosophy or mantra you follow?
“Everyone Deserves Great Design” is our company tagline and something that rings true with each project we work on.
You work out of Northern California. Is there a California influence on your style?
For sure! We love a relaxed aesthetic that merges new and old, modern and vintage pieces. With this approach we can easily reflect those who live in and use the space and introduce new items, too, for a fresh, updated look. The California influence also allows us to consider the outdoors as expanded square footage to our spaces. With the beautiful outdoor fabrics and furnishings now available, our choices are limitless.
What are the basic elements you consider for home updates?
Core considerations at Kerrie Kelly Design Lab go from the ground up. We love a great area rug or rustic floor to anchor the area, thoughtful wall color and interesting lighting pieces to then round out the background to the space. Then we work through adding layers of furniture, art and accessories to provide texture, color and life to the project.
Do you have any secrets for quick fixes or easy home updates for busy professionals?
Nothing updates and brings new life to a space like a quick coat of paint on walls or a tired piece of furniture. It provides instant gratification at an affordable price.
Where do you see interior design trends headed in 2013?
I think reclaimed elements will still have prominence, but the spin will be loads of color added to them in interesting finishes and textures. It seems our logo color, purple, is getting a lot of play on the runway, which typically means it is coming our way into interior design, too. Lastly, our team will continue to focus on our local vendors and products made in America—our Californian and American artisans are just too cool!
What are your favorite materials or looks you are currently using?
Kerrie Kelly Design Lab loves pairing rustic, reclaimed materials with shiny new ones. It allows a clean look with a warm feel.
What is the style of your own home?
We have always called our home “vintage modern.” The house itself was built in 1945 and we have a great influence from my time spent working for Ralph Lauren. With that, we highlight family and heirloom pieces but add pattern and lacquered finishes to maintain a fresh look.
